The Indian Premier League (IPL) has evolved into a mammoth as far as advertising spend goes, even in these tough times of global recession.

And even though the TV viewership ratings are lower as compared to last year and the rains are spoiling many of the matches currently being played in IPL in South Africa, the advertisers aren’t complaining and the cricket crazy fans are enjoying it to the hilt.

The IPL has entrenched itself into the psyche on the Indian TV viewers as the ultimate event and is being touted as India’s super bowl.

It is getting serious attention and money from brands, advertisers and media planners who are making adjustments to annual marketing calendars and budgets to be spent on IPL.

Advertisers are believed to be happy with the leverage they are getting with their association with this much hyped event and the trend seems to be strengthening with each edition.

Recession is making its presence felt in almost each and every industry. The latest victim of the recessionary economy in India is the event management companies and trade shows organizers. Earlier it was the advertising companies and the publishing community that went down in the first round.

The latest example of the onslaught is the JCK Jewellery Show supposed to be held in New Delhi, India between 27th and 30th June, 2009. The organiser, Reed Exhibitions has postponed the exhibition indefinitely.

This decision emphasises the gloom in the gem and jewellery industry due to the global market slowdown. There is a lack of buyers in the market for luxury items, aka, jewellery, these days and the manufacturers do not want to waste their hard earned money on an event that will not get them healthy return on investment (ROI).
